Ukraine is an east European country and it neighbours are Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Belarus, Russia, Romania and Moldova. The capital of Ukraine is Kiev, which is also the largest city in Ukraine with a population of 2.5 million out of a total population which has now declined to about 49 million. The main currency unit is the “Hryvnya.”
The key trade balance comprises tangible exports predominantly ferrous and non-ferrous metals, fuel and petroleum products, machinery and transport equipment, and food products, also “invisibles” such as tourism. The key imports are machinery and spare parts, transportation equipment and chemicals.
Ukraine's manufacturing sector, as a percentage of GDP has declined, from over 35% in 1997 to 25% in 2007 especially light manufacturing. Investment focus and economic activity has focussed on heavier engineering and manufacturing, built around base energy sourcing and generation and primary product production, such as oil, gas, coal, and steel. Arms production has prospered with lower labour rates and overhead costs making this sector internationally competitive. The agricultural machinery sector is internationally under-developed and short of investment capital. The domestic and consumer goods and appliances sectors are also under-developed. The country has a profusion of mineral deposits, including iron and manganese ores as well as mercury, titanium, and nickel. These reserves underpin heavy manufacturing in Ukraine. There are over 7 thousand identified deposits covering over 90 different mineral types, of which most are large enough to be of economic significance.
Ukraine encourages foreign investors, business people, and tourists. Ukraine is developing as one of the most active and diverse tourist destinations in the former Soviet region. The nation offers a broad range and rich tapestry of high level cultural, historical, national-folklore, and environmental tourism. Ukraine is well connected to the main capitals of Western Europe by airlines, railways, road networks and sea routes. The three favourite tourist destinations are Kiev (history, culture and architecture) the Crimea (warm climate and many spas) and the Carpathian mountains (alpine sports).
The financial sector is relatively undeveloped in Ukraine. The Ukrainian banking system includes the central bank—the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU)—and an assortment of commercial banks.
