Sweden is a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy at its head: King Carl Gustaf XVI. Royal power is limited to official and ceremonial functions. The legislative body is the Riksdag (Parliament) with 349 members. Parliamentary elections are held every four years.
Sweden prides itself on its Protestant ethic and its tolerant moral stance. Timber, hydropower, and iron ore constitute the resource base. Engineering accounts for over half of output and exports: telecommunications, the automotive industry (SAAB and Scania) and the pharmaceutical industries are of great importance.
Eighty percent of the workforce is organized through the trade-unions which elect two representatives to the boards of all Swedish companies with more than 25 employees.
Swedes have been prominent in the film industry and produced several successful Swedish Hollywood actors, such as Ingrid Bergman, Greta Garbo, Max von Sydow, Ann Margaret, Anita Ekberg, and Bibi Andersson. Swedish film directors have made internationally successful films, such as Ingmar Bergman.
Sweden has taken an interest in the fashion industry such as Hennes & Mauritz.
The 1973 oil crisis strengthened Sweden's commitment to decrease dependence on imported fossil fuels. Electricity from hydropower accounts for 44%, nuclear power for 47%. Biofuels produced 9% and wind power just 1%. Sweden is a net importer of electricity.
