Russia is rich in energy resources: the largest proven global reserves for natural gas (23%) , the second for coal (10%) the eighth for oil (12%) and 8% for uranium.
Natural gas: is of key strategic importance. The reserves are mainly owned by Gazprom, which has the monopoly over all natural gas pipelines, the exclusive right for exporting and it controls all gas pipelines leading out of Central Asia and thus their access to the European market: Russia supplies 25% of European gas consumption.
Oil: Russia is the largest non-OPEC producer after Saudi Arabia. The biggest Russian company is Rosneft. All the main oil pipelines (except the Caspian pipeline) are owned by the state-owned monopoly Transneft.
Coal: reserves are widely dispersed. The principal hard coal deposits are in the Pechora and Kuznetsk basins and or brown coal in the Kansk-Achinsk basin.
Shale: Russia has the biggest reserves in Europe and more than 80 deposits have been mapped, mainly in the Volga-Petchyorsk province and the Baltic Basin.
Uranium: exploration and development activities are concentrated on three areas east of the Urals. The most important uranium producing area is the Streltsovsky region near Krasnokamensk in the Chitinskaya Oblast.
Electricity production: Russia is the fourth producer after USA, China, and Japan, generated by thermal plants (60%) hydro (20%) and nuclear (20%). Russia exports electricity to the CIS countries, Latvia, Lithuania, China, Poland, Turkey and Finland.
Nuclear energy: this supplies 16% of electricity output and the number of reactors is to be increased to fifty nine.
Geothermal energy: resources exist in the Northern Caucasus, Western Siberia, Lake Baikal, and in Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands.
Wind energy: wind resources exist on the coastal areas of the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, the vast steppes and mountainous areas.
Tidal energy: a small pilot tidal power plant was constructed near Murmansk. There is an experimental turbine at Kislaya Guba and plans exist to continue at Mezen Bay and Tugur Bay.
