Malaysia consists of thirteen states and three federal territories. The country is located in South East Asia and the capital city is Kuala Lumpur. Putrajaya is the seat of the federal government. The country has two regions: Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo. The country borders Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and with sea in between, also the Philippines.
Malaysia became a unified state in 1963. Previously, a series of colonies were established by the United Kingdom and the western half of modern Malaysia was composed of several separate kingdoms. This group of colonies was known as British Malaya until 1946, when it was reorganized as the Federation of Malaya and became an independent nation in 1957. The early years were marred by an armed conflict with Indonesia and the expulsion of Singapore.
The country experienced an economic boom and underwent rapid development during the late 20th century. With a current GDP per capita of over $13 thousand, it is a newly industrialized country with a strong agricultural sector. International trade plays a large role in its economy.
The population of Malaysia is approximately 25 million. Malays form the majority of the population and there are sizable Chinese and Indian communities. Islam is the largest and the official religion of the federation. Malaysian is the official language.
Malaysia is the founding member of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASAEN) and is a member of international organizations such as the United Nation,s the Commonwealth of Nations, the Developing Eight (D-8) countries. Rubber and palm oil trees were introduced for commercial purposes, and over time, Malaya became the world's largest major producer of tin, rubber, and palm oil. These three commodities, along with other core raw materials defined Malaysia's economic development through into the mid-20th century.
Chinese and Indians came to work in the mines and on the plantations. Although many have now returned to their home countries, many settled permanently. Historic Chinese control of the country's economy has been ceded largely in favour of the Bumiputras/Malays in such essential or strategic industries as petroleum retailing, transportation and agriculture.
The rapid economic boom led to a variety of supply problems: labour shortages resulted in an influx of millions of foreign workers.
The current pace of development is seen to be more sustainable and the current account has settled into a structural surplus, providing a cushion to capital flight. The fixed exchange rate was abandoned in July 2005 in favour of a managed floating system.
Malaysia has an extensive road network connecting all of the major cities and towns on the Western Peninsular coast. By contrast, roads in the eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia are still relatively undeveloped: winding roads pass through mountainous regions and many are still gravel roads. This has resulted in the continued use of rivers and air transport as the main or alternative mode of transport into the interior. Western Malaysia has an extensive railroad network, which connects all major cities and towns on the peninsular, including Singapore. There are seaports along the extensive coasts of the country. The major ports are Port Klang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Johor, also in Tanjung Kidurong, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Kuantan, Pasir Gudang, Penang, Miri, Sandakan and Tawau.
Airports are found throughout the country; Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the main airport. Other important international airports include Kota Kinabalu, Penang, Kuching, Langkawi and Senai. There are also airports in smaller towns, and a great many small domestic airstrips in rural Sabah and Sarawak.
The telecommunication service on Peninsular Malaysia is based on microwave radio relay and international telecommunications are provided by submarine cables and satellite.
