Korean is the official language of both North and South Korea. There are over 80 million Korean speakers: South Korea has 50 million and North Korea has 27 million. Other Korean speakers are in the USA at 2.5 million China at 2 million, the former Soviet Union at 1 million, Japan at 700 thousand, Canada at 250 thousand, United Kingdom at 200 thousand, Germany at 150 thousand, Vietnam at 100 thousand, Philippines at thousand and Australia at 50 thousand. There are about 700 thousand people elsewhere speak Korean because of job or social requirements.
Korean is written in the hangul script, which was invented in the 15th century. While hangul may appear logographic, it is actually a phonemic alphabet organized into syllabic blocks. Each block consists of at least two of the 24 hangul letters (jamo): at least one each of the 14 consonants and 10 vowels.
South Korea is among the most advanced auto-producing countries in the world: fifth by output volume and sixth by export volume.
Leading auto companies included Hyundai, SsangYong and Kia. The purchase of Daewoo Motors by General Motors Corporation in 2002, and Hyundai's completion of a one billion dollar assembly plant in Alabama in 2005 have driven the Korean automobile industry to focus on North America, its largest export market.
