The Republic of the Philippines is an archipelago nation located in South-East Asia and comprises 7,107 islands in the Western part of the Pacific Ocean. Its bordering countries are Indonesia, Malaysia, Palau and the Republic of China. The Philippines is the only Southeast Asian country not to have any borders with its neighbours. Manila is its capital city. It is the world's 12th most populous country, approaching 90 million people. Its national economy is the 47th largest in the world with a 2006 gross domestic product of over US$ 120 billion. In addition, there are over 11 million overseas Filipinos worldwide.

The Philippines was a Spanish colony, later an American one. The Philippines gained its independence from the United States in 1946 and became a democracy until the authoritarian rule of Ferdinand Marcos. He was overthrown in 1986. Political upheavals alternated with peaceful transition of power in the period that followed.

Today, the country has many cultural links with the West derived mainly from those of Spain, Latin America and the United States. Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion. There are also followers of Islam.

The two official languages of the Philippines are Filipino and English.

The Philippines is a recently industrialized country based originally on an agricultural economy. Substantial economic contributions now come from manufacturing and mining as well as remittances from overseas Filipinos and from service sectors such as tourism. As travel – based communications and the country’s electronic infrastructure have developed, so business process outsourcing has blossomed.

By the 1960s, the Philippine economy was regarded as the second-largest in Asia, next only to Japan. However, the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos proved disastrous to the Philippine economy, sliding the country into severe economic recession, only to recover starting in the 1990s with a program of economic liberalization and the breaking of Marcos-era monopolies and the system of cronyism.

Despite the growing economy, the Philippines has to solve complex core problems in the future, including much needed improvement to the physical infrastructure, more efficient tax systems to collect government revenues, further deregulation and privatization of the economy and increasing trade integration within the region.

China and India have emerged as major economic competitors, particularly in telecommunications. Regional development is uneven, with Manila gaining most of the new economic growth at the expense of the other regions, although the government has taken steps to distribute economic growth by promoting investment in other areas.

The country is a founding member of the Asian Development Bank hosting its headquarters. It is a member of the World Bank, the IMF, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation group (APEC) and the World Trade Organization (WTO)

Filipino culture is a fusion of pre-Hispanic indigenous Asian civilizations mixed with Hispanic and American. It has also been influenced by Arab, Chinese and Indian cultures. Filipino beliefs have profound influences from Hinduism and, to a lesser extent, Buddhism.

The Hispanic influences in culture are derived from Spain and Mexico: the result of over three centuries of Spanish colonial rule. These influences are most evident in literature, folk music, folk dance, language, food, art and religion, such as Roman Catholic Church festivals. Names of countless streets, towns and provinces are in Spanish and Spanish architecture has had a major impact, seen especially in the country's churches, government buildings and universities.

Filipino cuisine is also heavily influenced by Mexican and Spanish cuisine. Chinese influences in local culture are most evident in Filipino cuisine: the prevalence of noodles, known locally as mami. Many Filipino superstitions are also Chinese in origin and other Chinese influences include linguistic borrowings and the occasional Chinese-derived surnames.

The use of the English language in the Philippines is recent and evidence of American legacy.

As with many cultures, music, including traditional music and leisure activities are important aspects of society. Popular sports include boxing, basketball, badminton, billiards, football and ten-pin bowling.
