Denmark is a North European country with a well-earned reputation for hospitality, compassion and openness: it enjoys a small but open, modern and highly flexible free market economy. Denmark is self-sufficient in energy - producing oil, natural gas, wind- and bio-energy. Its principal exports are machinery, instruments and food products. The U.S. is Denmark's largest non-European trading partner. Aircraft, computers, machinery, and instruments are among the major U.S. exports to Denmark. Among major Danish exports to the world are industrial machinery, chemical products, furniture, pharmaceuticals, canned ham and pork and a wide range of other finished agricultural products.
The Danish economy focuses predominantly on two activities: high-tech agriculture and up-to-date small-scale industry with a high dependence on foreign trade. This successful economy supports extensive government-led welfare measures and enables comfortable living standards. Denmark is a net exporter of food. Denmark did not to join the 11 other European Union members who launched the euro on 1 January 1999.
