Leading language translation specialists; Total Language Solutions; were required to provide certified translations of legal and official documents. The originals were only supplied as hard copies or uneditable electronic copies. They often reconstruct the originals as editable electronic documents for translation, formatted to match the original layout. The translation can then easily be compared to the original, helping the user to see that all the text has been translated. They usually supply three copies of each translation with copies of scans of the originals, plus documents certifying that the translations are true and accurate.
For an international supplier of subscription services to scientific research databases, they are sometimes asked to help in the checking and amendment of supply contracts in other languages. A recent example involved translating a French version back into English for information purposes, and then making changes to the French version as required, keeping the changes in context for a seamless effect. The final versions in both languages were aligned into our translation memory archives for future reference.

The original application was InDesign CS2 for Mac and the ‘inx’ extension was utilised which is compatible with our CAT (= Computer-Aided Translation) software. No separate link images files were supplied; only a PDF was available. One service Total Language Solutions can offer is the ability to create link images from a PDF. The link images were then adapted from the PDF using Adobe Illustrator CS3 and re-saved as ‘eps’ format (Encapsulated PostScript). This capture of the images enables us to produce finished artwork of the translation as a high resolution PDF, which is the preferred format for most clients and printers. Software ‘plug-ins’ enabled us to automatically input the translation into the document avoiding time consuming and expensive formatting. The translated work was then checked and proofread in the final format by highlighting annotations on the PDF which were then incorporated into the final file and updated into our translation memory.
The brief was to translate a website into Chinese (Simplified), Arabic (United Arab Emirates), Finnish, Polish, Romanian and Swedish for a business specialising in Environment & Energy global consultancy which provides advice on all aspects of environmental issues such as energy, sustainability, climate change, and business risk issues. Using primarily MS Word 2003 the work was translated by professional translators with relevant experience in the subject matter and also checked and proofread by a second linguist who also has appropriate expertise using track changes. The client feedback from one of their satellite offices indicated they were very happy with the quality of the translation and correct use of terminology. The translation has been stored in one of our many databases for continuity purposes and will benefit the client when they come to do updates or to recast similar information in other formats, as they receive a 50% discount for memory matches
