Do rush jobs demand a higher translation fee?

Almost inevitably: we certainly undertake them. But translators are only human; they may not be available –or want- to work evening or weekends; many have so much work that they don’t need the extra load and there is a premium payable to them for this service. To some significant extent, we are able to mitigate the impact because of our twenty-four hour operating profile: you may be in bed in Europe whilst on the other side of the world in daylight; your material is being translated. Don’t forget, however, that whether the work is being done during the day, at night or even weekend, the output of the translator is inevitably confined to the same range of 2,000 per day with the editing and proofreading maximised at about 4,000 words a day. We only charge a ‘rush fee’ when this is required to persuade an otherwise unavailable translator to change their mind!
