For Western and East European languages, there is a deeper pool of experienced, qualified translators, particularly in the principal Western languages such as French, German, Spanish, and Italian. (Commonly nicknamed ‘FIGS’)
In other parts of the world, there are fewer translators available, for example, in some of the African languages, certain Far Eastern languages. Also standards vary considerably; there may be a very big demand for Chinese and there are many Chinese translators but equally, many of them are not up to international standards in terms of experience, quality and competence.
Some languages are more labour intensive: Japanese, Tagalog, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai and Cambodian are further away from European languages in terms of their grammatical structure. The specific types of software used are less well developed, more expensive and slower. All this means that translating from a Western/Eastern European font into other scripts such as Arabic, adds considerably to the time, and therefore the cost.
