Why are there significantly different pricing tariffs between different agencies offering what seems to be the same service?
They aren’t. Clearly, every translation agency offers phase 1, the basic translation service: for some agencies that is all they offer and they tend to be, for what they do, actually relatively expensive. They charge £100 or more per thousand words.
The full translation checking and proofing service from English into (for example) French would cost approximately £120 per thousand. Some agencies charge £90 but then there is no editing and proofreading or, if there is, it is a very cursory version of what you would be entitled to expect. And it is done by the same person!
When “checking/proofreading” or “editing/proof reading” is offered, this phraseology covers a multitude of vague deliverables: most agencies mean only that the final work would be evaluated for completeness and presentation and then sent off to you.
We prefer to talk about “checking and proofreading” and by that we mean that a second independent linguist, equally as experienced as the Phase One Translator, will diligently compare the source and target languages on a word-by-word and line-by-line basis to ensure 100% accuracy, technical accuracy, meaning, interpretation, appropriate style and readability.
