How fast does a translator work?

An experienced quality translator will achieve about 2,000 words a day on the basis of a five-day working week: for internal use, to achieve the “general sense of meaning” translations, the number of words per day can be higher but such translations are indicative, rather than precise.

The checking/proofreading is a faster process: one would expect perhaps 4,000 words a day. Some translators use complex computer programmes which, depending on the volumes, technology, platforms etc. can increase productivity.
