How quickly can you translate my material?
We work in terms of “business days” and the assumption is that the professional translator can undertake about 2,000 words a day.
The editing/proofreading function can be achieved at the rate of about 4,000 words a day by similarly qualified linguists. From this, you can work out according to the length of your document what is the minimum number of business days required.
If there is more than one target language then they can be translated in parallel so any time increase is usually modest.
Our translation process comprises a number of stages to ensure 100% quality assurance.
The six key translation stages are:
- an evaluation of the material sent to us to be sure that it is complete and accessible, sending the same off to the translator, then
- the translator undertakes his/her assignment at the rate of 2,000 words a day and
- sends the original plus the translation back to us, then
- we again check for completeness etc. and send both off to the proofreading linguist who checks the translated material.
- the checker / proof reader returns the material to us
- we review it for completeness and send it to the client.
Any translation company which short cuts any of these six stages is not delivering the UK-defined “translation service “to their client.
Some clients prefer an “only translation” service where the document is for internal use or “an approximate understanding” is required. Whilst this does not meet the EU/UK standards, it is a less expensive approach and can be sufficient in some circumstances. Also, it speeds the turnaround process.
However, a single stage translation will not be suitable for external use, publication etc. and certainly would not, if errors were discovered, absolve you from legal exposure in damages consequent thereto.
