What is a dialect?

A dialect is a derivative of a language. There are a number of English dialects including Lancastrian and Yorkshire. By contrast, Welsh and Gaelic are separate languages from English.

Breton is not a derivative of French and Catalan is not a derivative of Spanish. By contrast, Brazilian Portuguese is a derivative of the original language of the home country: Portugal.
