Translations & Services Glossary

This translations glossary offers definitions of some of the technical phraseology used in Total Language Solutions translations sector.

M

Machine translation

This is sometimes referred to as "free translation" not the same as memory translation; the two should not be confused. Machine translation is the process by which a software programme will translate text from one language to another: Machine translation into English can produce some witty and amusing outcomes. Machine translation can be obtained on the web. More generally a machine translation will give an idea of what the text is about in terms of subjects included rather than the meaning. It can be a worthwhile step, for example, for screening in-bound email in foreign languages, to check which merit further attention or translation.

Matches

Matches are text segments for which there are already translations in the memory database or which are repeated within the text being translated and so once translated, do not require re-translation. Total Language Solutions quotes on the basis of charging only 50% of the full translation rate for matches. The 50% discount rate for matches covers the cost of the specialist software identification process the operator's insertion of the match, and full checking and proofreading of matches within the final document. This process is also of great value to the client because it ensures consistency of treatment for the same words and phrases.

Memory translation

Memory translation is a key element of the qwerty word process: it can significantly raise productivity, speeds the delivery process (turn-around time) and ensures a higher level of consistency, especially when the same client commissions a number of translation assignments over an extended period with significant time gaps in between. The software stores key phrases and sentences, such that when that phrase or sentence re-occurs, the human translator is offered the previous translation which can be adopted or rejected manually. Thus memory translation in the qwerty process supports consistency of terminology, of communication standards and enhances consistency in presentation. Memory translation is not the same as machine translation and the two should never be confused. Memory translation tracks the source-to-target translation process.
