Translations & Services Glossary

This translations glossary offers definitions of some of the technical phraseology used in Total Language Solutions translations sector.

L

Legal court interpreter

Court interpreters are usually officially vetted interpreters with the necessary subject knowledge to provide appropriate interpretation during legal or court proceedings. In the UK they may be on the list of public service interpreters, having passed the relevant modules of this examination.

Linguist Register

The Linguist Register is the qwerty word proprietary exclusive database of professional linguists: translators, interpreters and language tutors. Over ten years it has become probably the world's authoritative database and successful registrants, having been subjected to a rigorous pre-registration evaluation, are exclusive in that database to Total Language Solutions.

Linux

An open source operating system developed by its users who publish their contributions for free.

Literal translation

This is a translation which closely tracks the construction and component words and phrases of the source text. The literal translation is usually to be avoided as it does not flow well. Usually a translation reflecting natural usage of the target language conveys the sense and meaning more successfully. There are occasions when the requirement is for a highly literal translation, for example producing a translation of a legal document or contract for reference in negotiations, or when the original text is highly detailed and precise (technical instructions etc.)

Locale

Within the language group (e.g. English) there are many other versions in terms of spelling and phraseology: American, Canadian, Australian and so on. Each is a distinct locale: the range of these can be seen from the spell check options in Microsoft.

Localisation

The process of adapting a product (in the context of translation usually software) to a specific locale, i.e. to the language, cultural norms, standards, laws and requirements of the target market. Includes, but is not limited to, translation of the screen texts, help files, etc.
