This translations glossary offers definitions of some of the technical phraseology used in Total Language Solutions translations sector.

C

C, C++, Java

C is a programming language widely used for systems programming. C++ An object-oriented version of C that has been widely used to develop enterprise and commercial applications. Microsoft's Visual C++ is the most widely used C++ language. Java A trademark used for a programming language designed to develop applications, especially ones for the Internet, that can operate on different platforms (Mac, Windows, Linux etc). Developed by Sun.

Certified translation; Sworn translation; Sworn translator

A translation certified by Total Language Solutions as a company as being a true and accurate translation (for legal purposes). SWORN TRANSLATION: A translation can be sworn before a notary public to be a correct translation. The notary checks the identity of the person swearing the translation. In some countries, translators can qualify as court-authorised translators or sworn translators who are entitled to validate translations for legal use.

CGI

A Common Gateway Interface (CGI) allows a HTTP request to execute a program on the server.

Culturalisation / internationalisation / localisation

Different countries, regions and localities have different associations with and take different messages and understandings from certain colours, gestures, behavioural patterns, phrases and sentences: Adapting a translation to give the intended final effect may require selection of suitable images, colours, metaphors etc. Internationalisation is the term given to the process of removing or neutralising any locale-specific elements from the original text, to simplify the process of translation into many languages. Localisation is a term used for translation plus the process of adapting the detail of the original text for a particular locale or target audience. e.g. use of appropriate units of measurement, and numerical formats, reference to the appropriate regulations or technical standards, inclusion of appropriate contact details etc.
